The University of St. Gallen Summer School in Empirical Research Method (SSERM) was an amazing experience. During the first week I took the ‘Case Study’ course with Professor Andrew Bennett. During the second week, I took the ‘Qualitative Comparative Analysis’ course with Professor Charles Ragin. Let me say, it was a very intense two weeks, in which I have reworked many of my research frameworks and learned many new analysis skills and perspectives. The teaching quality and standard was incredible. I was able to meet many other PhD students from all over the world. I also got the opportunity to visit the beautiful Swiss mountains, which were remarkable. This opportunity and experience wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business, the University of St. Gallen and the Global Business School Network. Amlie Guyot-Staal is currently a full time PhD student at the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business. Her PhD topic is: Coping with complexity and wicked challenges: An exploratory study of civil service managers creating sustainability policy and change in the Western Cape Government. Amlie’s academic background was in Social Development and Sustainable Development Planning and Management. She is also an entrepreneur, and is involved in three start-up sustainability driven enterprises: Green Talent (CC), the Sustainability Career and Entrepreneurship Centre (NPC) and Artisan Mushroom.
