About the Workshops
Ivey has utilized case-based learning for decades and is a global-leader in case publishing and promoting the case method. More than 15,000 participants have benefited from and enjoyed the practical focus found in our workshops, bringing the case method to classrooms at colleges and universities in more than 60 countries.
The Case Method is a powerful teaching approach that combines academic theory with practical application. Cases focus on business issues that managers face every day – not fictitious scenarios, but actual real-world problems requiring thorough analysis and planning. Ivey’s commitment to real-world learning helps to develop extraordinary leaders that have extraordinary careers. Our Case Workshops immerse participants in the Case Method through a combination of participation, case analysis and interactive exercises.
The workshop focuses on the process of teaching and writing cases. During the case teaching section participants will learn:
- how to create a case teaching plan:
- different approaches for managing class discussion;
- how to adjust their approach for case teaching to different audiences; and,
- opportunities to use cases for exams and reports.
The case writing section includes the following topics:
- framing your case and creating an outline;
- challenges, remedies and trade-offs when writing cases;
- how to create an effective teaching note; and,
- how to effectively manage the data collection and field research process.
Participants will not only learn from the Ivey faculty member leading the workshop, but will also learn from each other, sharing classroom best-practices and their case teaching and writing experiences. Seasoned case editors and publishing experts will also join the workshop virtually adding to the roster.
Dr. Rod White
Roderick E. White is an Associate Professor of General Management at Ivey Business School. Since joining the school’s General Management group in 1979, he has taught Business Policy and Strategic Management at the undergraduate, masters and doctoral levels. He was a visiting professor at INSEAD during 1996. Rod earned his BA in Honors Business from Western University, and an MBA and DBA from Harvard University.
His research interests include the functioning of top management teams and questions of business strategy-organization. Currently, he is exploring how evolutionary forces affect interesting business behaviours. He received the Academy of Management Review Decade Award for the article, An Organizational Learning Framework: From Intuition to Institutions. He served as Ivey’s Associate Dean – Faculty Development and Research from 2009 to 2014. Rod has consulted for numerous organizations. He has served on the board of Sandvik Canada Ltd., Biotron Advisory Board (Western) and the editorial board of the Strategic Management Journal.
Refreshments (morning and afternoon) and lunch are included in the registration price. Accommodations and other meals are the responsibility of the participant.
