Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration
Professor Sallar is currently an Associate Professor at Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) School of Business. He teaches Ethics, Statistics, and Research Methods at GIMPA. He is also the West African Regional Director of Management Development Institute (MDI) for Health Care Organizations which is funded by Johnson & Johnson (which is the world’s most comprehensive and broadly-based manufacturer of health care products), with collaborating partners from GIMPA/UCLA/Amref Kenya and University of Cape Town. The MDI is a one-week intensive program designed to enhance the leadership and management skills of program managers and leaders of Sub-Saharan African entities that are devoted to delivering heath care services to underserved populations.
Outside the walls of GIMPA Professor Sallar is the Board Chairman of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Accra which is the largest referral/teaching hospital in West Africa.
Prof Sallar obtained his PhD in Epidemiology from University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. He also holds a B.Sc. (Legon), MBA (Baruch College of the City University of New York), and MPH (New York Medical College) degrees.
Prior to joining GIMPA, Prof Sallar taught in Ohio University, Athens, (USA) and Jackson State University in Mississippi USA. He also worked at the British Columbia Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS and Office of Public Health in Louisiana, USA as the Evaluation Coordinator of HIV Prevention Programs. The latter position entailed monitoring and evaluation of HIV prevention plans including reviewing and writing of sections of the epidemiological profile of HIV infection in the state of Louisiana.
His current research interests encompass HIV/AIDS in national and international settings, health literacy, health of African immigrants and refugees in USA, and injury epidemiology. He has taught classes in Epidemiology, Program Evaluation, Research and Quantitative Methods, HIV/AIDS and other STIs, Maternal and Child Health, Ethics, and Statistics.
Professor Sallar has published in peer reviewed journals such as: New England Journal of Medicine; Social Science and Medicine; Preventive Medicine; International Quarterly of Community Health Education; African Health Sciences; Journal of National Medical Association; Sexuality and Culture; and Journal of Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities.
Prof. Sallar has presented papers in local and international conferences in USA, Canada, Netherlands, Senegal, and Ghana and also participated in workshops in USA, Canada, Kenya and Spain. He currently serves as a reviewer for peer reviewed journals and in 2014 completed his three years as the Chairman of the Refugee and Immigrant Health Caucus of the American Public Health Association.
