Katekani with the stunning view of St. Gallen

My name is Katekani Chabalala, and I am currently pursuing a PhD in Management with a specialization in Energy at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) Business School in South Africa. My research focuses on understanding energy systems within the South African Development Community (SADC) and exploring pathways toward their decarbonization, decentralization, and digitalization to tackle challenges like energy access and equity. Alongside my academic pursuit, I have extensive experience as an international development practitioner, overseeing initiatives aimed at strengthening science, technology, and innovation (STI) partnerships across South Africa.

As a recipient of the 2024 Global School of Empirical Research Methods (GSERM) Scholarship, in partnership with the Global Business School Network (GBSN) (of which my home university, Wits Business School, is a member), I wish to reflect on the impact this opportunity has had on my academic and personal journey.

The scholarship provided me with financial support to attend two courses at the GSERM summer school, hosted by the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland. Firstly, I completed Regression Analysis II – Linear Models, facilitated by Professor Tim McDaniels. This course significantly enhanced my expertise in applied ordinary least squares multiple regression analysis. Secondly, I studied Qualitative Bayesian Reasoning for Case Studies with Professor Tasha Fairfield, which greatly expanded my knowledge of Bayesian reasoning and its application in qualitative research design. This experience deepened my understanding of various empirical research methodologies, and I believe it will greatly benefit my ongoing research.

The GSERM summer school was an amazing experience for me. I connected with diverse PhD students and industry professionals from various countries, exchanging perspectives and learning about their research fields. I also enjoyed exploring Swiss history through guided tours across different cities. The stunning scenery, including peaceful lakes, scenic hiking trails, and breathtaking mountain views, made a lasting impression on me.

I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to the GSERM Team, led by Dr. Hans-Joachim Knopf, for organizing the summer school and their warm hospitality. It was truly exciting and a pleasure to be part of such a well-organized program. I am also grateful to the GBSN for generously funding my tuition fees and accommodation costs.

A special thank you goes to my supervisors at the Wits Business School’s African Energy Leadership Centre (AELC) for their unwavering support, mentorship, and guidance as I progress in my PhD journey. This scholarship has greatly influenced how I view education and my future career aspirations, highlighting the importance of perseverance and the support of academic communities.

My advice to students considering applying for this scholarship is simple: take the chance. It’s natural to fear rejection, but never let that fear hold you back from seizing opportunities like this. Once awarded the scholarship, leverage on it to network—schedule meetings in advance with fellow scholars in Switzerland to explore potential collaborations in your research area. And remember, at the end of it all, you’ll earn academic credits and a certificate of attendance.
