H. Landis Gabel

H. Landis Gabel is Emeritus Novartis Chaired Professor of Economics and Management at INSEAD. Prior to his retirement from the faculty in 2008, he held the Novartis Chair in Management and the Environment. He holds BSc (engineering), MBA, and PhD (economics) degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and a MSc (economics) degree from the London School of Economics. Before coming to INSEAD in 1982, Professor Gabel was on the faculty of the University of Virginia.

Professor Gabel’s research and teaching focuses on microeconomics and public policy, in particular industrial, trade, and environmental policy.  He has written or edited six books, most recently Frontiers of Environmental Economics published by Edward Elgar, and he has published papers in economics, legal, environmental, and business journals. 

Professor Gabel was Dean of Faculty and Deputy Dean of INSEAD from 2001 to 2006. Prior to that, he served as Dean of the MBA Program, Associate Dean of Research and Development, Chair of the Economics and Political Science Department and of the Strategy and Environment Department. In addition, he founded INSEAD’s Center for the Management of Environmental Resources in 1989 and co-directed it until 2005.

In addition to his work with the Global Business School Network, he has served as a member of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the ecch, the International Schools of Business Management (ISBM), the Academic Council of the European Institute for Advanced Studies in Management (EIASM), and the Supervisory Board of the European Academy of Business in Society (EABIS). Beyond these links with academic organizations, Professor Gabel is active in various organizations dedicated to land and natural environmental protection.
