The skills that are best related to executive presence are the skills required to be excellent at public speaking. 🎤

Executive presence is about presenting your ideas so they can be heard, and this requires persuasive speaking and language skillsclear concise sentences, imitating words and body language of the audience you are addressing so they feel part of the discussion.

Our expert Matthew Kohut is the Managing Partner of KNP Communications and co-author of Compelling People: The Hidden Qualities that Make Us Influential.

  • Matthew has over 20 years of professional experience writing and preparing speakers for both general and expert audiences. In addition to conducting media and public speaking trainings with KNP, he has served as a communications consultant to organizations including NASA, the Department of Energy, the Environmental Protection Agency, and Harvard University. He is also currently a Fellow at the Center for the Advancement of Public Action at Bennington College. He previously worked at Harvard University as Research Specialist to the Dean of the Kennedy School, serving as Professor Joseph Nye’s speechwriter and researcher. Matt holds a Masters in Public Administration from Harvard Kennedy School and a B.A. from the Writing Seminars at Johns Hopkins University. In addition to his career in communications, he worked for several years as a professional bassist, touring the United States and Europe with numerous pop music acts.
