Dr Stanley Semelane is the Head of Stakeholder Relations, ESG & Sustainability at Sasol Limited. He joined Sasol from the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) where he was a Senior Researcher responsible for climate services, he led climate change finance research as well as the mitigation and adaptation measures for South Africa’s just energy transition. He was part of the team that worked on the adaptation aspect of the 2021 – 2030 updated National Determination Commitments (NDCs) report where he led the South African adaptation needs costs estimates. He was responsible for Just Energy Transition (JET) research strategy development at CSIR Energy Centre. He is a thought leader in the localisation and regional economic diversification research in support of a Just Transition.
Dr Semelane through the aforementioned roles gained a wealth of experience in dealing with a broad range of complex issues such as (1) Financial Sustainability Strategy Development, (2) Revenue Generation in the Corporate Sector, (3) Budget Management as well as Project Management in the area of solar, wind, waste-to-energy, energy efficiency, waste-to-energy and energy demand management among others.
He holds the following formal qualification: PhD in Energy Studies (UJ), (2) MSc in Engineering (Wits), (3) BSc Honours in Energy Studies (UJ), and a BCom in Economics & Econometrics (UJ). He supervises postgraduate students and has published papers in international journals and has written several book chapters in the South African Just Transition.
