Thulani is the Founder and Executive Chairman of BuiltAfrica Holdings (since 2008). He is also the former Chairman of the Standard Bank Group and the Standard Bank of South Africa Limited (2015 to 2022). He is former Chairman of Imperial Holdings Limited (2008-2015) and MTN Zakhele Limited (2010-2015).
He began his career as a town and regional planner in 1982. After practicing as a director with a firm of architects and town planners he joined Eskom in 1993. In 2000 he became the Chief Executive of Eskom, a position he served in until 30 April 2007.
BuiltAfrica Group develops and operates renewable energy plants and consults in energy efficiency. He has served as the Executive Chairman since inception.
Thulani is a registered Town and Regional Planner (TRP (SA)) and is a corporate member of the SA Planning Institute
He holds a master’s degree in Urban & Regional Planning from Ball State University (USA) and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Botswana. In 1995 he completed the Programme for Executive Development at IMD in Lausanne, Switzerland.
