University of St. Gallen Doctoral Research Methods Scholarships

The University of St. Gallen offers ten scholarships to its two-week Empirical Research Methods Symposia in Switzerland, for doctoral students currently studying at GBSN member schools in developing countries. These GBSN scholars receive tuition and lodging during an invigorating week of honing their research skills with leading faculty.

The scholarship application period for the 2021 Global School of Empirical Research Methods is closed.

Scholarship for High Potentials from Developing Countries


The University of St. Gallen is offering 10 scholarships to doctoral students enrolled at GBSN member schools in developing countries to the Global School of Empirical Research Methods (GSERM) in Switzerland. The scholarships are only for courses in the main period (June 2020).

The GSERM is a high-calibre integrated program teaching methodology for PhD students and postdocs from leading universities all over the world. The GSERM offers an attractive course-based learning atmosphere on different aspects of empirical research. GSERM is structured in different modules. Participants select one course per week as these courses are taught concurrently.

The scholarship will cover tuition and accommodation fees for up to two consequent weeks. Applicants can choose one session, or two sessions (Session II [8-12 June] or Sessions II [8-12 June] and III [15-19 June]), and indicate the selected courses for each session(s) in their application. For an overview on all courses offered, please visit (http://www.gserm.ch/stgallen/) The scholarship will cover the cost of the course(s) and accommodation costs. Applicants will need to cover all other costs (flight, visa, living expenses, insurances, etc.).

Eligibility Requirements

  • Enrolled PhD students at GBSN member school in Africa and Afghanistan
  • Not older than 35 years, younger applicants will be preferred
  • Convincing motivation letter
  • Excellent grades and performance

  • Afghanistan
  • Bangladesh
  • Indonesia
  • Lebanon
  • Thailand
  • Qatar
  • Peru

Please mind the deadline for submitting your application. Please only apply if you can afford travel and living expenses as well as costs for visa and insurances.

How to Apply


Applicants must complete the full application AND send all of the required documents to the Global Business School Network to qualify for a scholarship.

Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee at the University of St. Gallen. Only fully completed applications will be reviewed. Please email applications to gsermscholarship@gbsn.org with “GSERM SCHOLARSHIP PhD” in the subject heading.

Course Structure


GSERM is structured in different modules. Participants select one course per week as these courses are taught concurrently.

GSERM courses are awarded 4 ECTS credits if exams/homework are successfully passed.

GSERM courses are divided into different levels: basic, intermediate, advanced and research. Please pay careful attention to indicated levels in the course directory.Courses on research level (PEF-courses) are especially designed for PhD students in Economics with substantial background in quantitative methods.

If you successfully pass the exam you will receive an official University of St. Gallen transcript about 10 weeks after the exam. If you do not take the exam you may send GSERM a request for a participation certificate.

Workshop lectures (only at GSERM St. Gallen)
As a special service to GSERM participants, they offer 3 new workshop lectures free of charge. The attendance of all 3 courses (Regression, Applied Maths / Statistics with R) is possible as they are taught in the morning, afternoon and late afternoon. Workshop lectures can be selected optionally, but only in combination with at least one regular GSERM course.
