Ways the institution will support the GBSN mission to improve access to quality management and entrepreneurship education for the develop world:
The Whitman School has many international students from developing countries who come to Syracuse to study and bring the enhance business knowledge and skills back to their home countries. We are currently in planning stages of a partnership with the Institute of Management Technology, Ghaziabad India and have a current program with The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, through which we seek to provide short term training programs for the visiting student groups in addition to traditional student exchanges. In addition, Whitman’s high priority on experiential learning will create more projects addressing business challenges in the developing world, such as the projects in Nairobi, Kenya in our “Managing in a Global Setting” course.

Institutional Contributions to the Network Platform in the First Year:
The Whitman School is actively looking for opportunities to participate in the projects that best fit our areas of expertise, such as entrepreneurship, business analytics, innovation and sustainability.

“The Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University is proud to be a new member of the Global Business School Network, joining many other highly-regarded institutions. In particular we are excited to work alongside the business schools’ members to improve the access to quality management education for all, including the chance to advise and mentor regional educators in developing countries.” – Eugene Anderson, Dean

Institutional Engagement with Fellow GBSN Member Institutions:
The Whitman School is looking for opportunities for sharing of expertise among the member institutions for faculty and student exchanges, as well as for development of global business education and thought leadership. We hope to also engage in opportunities that would involve the other schools at Syracuse University based on the nature of the programs and areas of knowledge needed.

The biggest challenge facing management in your community and how the institution addresses this challenge:
The Syracuse community has a number of challenges that it faces. The three that the Whitman School is addressing are:

  1. The transformation of an old manufacturing-based local economy into one driven by high technology that will attract and retain young professional talents.
  2. Impact under-resourced sections of our community by providing opportunities for entrepreneurial ventures. We currently help with our Southside Innovation Center in this impoverished area.
  3. We are working to help a large refugee population that has settled in our city’s northside communities, providing support and programs.

Syracuse University and the Whitman School supports the Institute for Veterans and Military Families with programming such as our Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans. One of our faculty members Dr. Mike Haynie, is the Vice Chancellor for Strategic Initiatives & Innovation at Syracuse, and also the Barnes Professor of Entrepreneurship. He heads up this organization. Their mission is to: To empower service members, veterans, and their families through actionable research, innovative programs, and insightful analytics. Syracuse University has a historic commitment to serving veterans and their families and the founding of the IVMF in 2011 further expands that commitment to serve across the country and beyond.Supported by a world-class advisory board and public and private partners, our professional staff delivers unique and innovative programs in career, vocations, and entrepreneurship education and training to post 9/11 veterans and active-duty military spouses. The IVMF also provides actionable and national impacting research, policy analysis and program evaluation; and works with communities and non-profits across the nation to enhance service delivery for the 22.5 million veterans throughout the United States and their families.
