GBSN Members are Invited to March’s Cross-Border Collab: Fostering the Growth of Sustainability Leaders

We are honored to have Ayat Soliman of the World Bank joining us for the March Collab. As the Regional Director for Sustainable Development for Eastern and Southern Africa she is responsible for setting policy direction and ensuring the integrated delivery of sustainable development programs in 26 countries across the region. Ms. Soliman’s knowledge will be invaluable as we discuss how GBSN Members can foster the growth of the sustainability leaders of the future.

Ms. Soliman has over 25 years of experience working on sustainability issues ranging from water, agriculture, social and urban development, in addition to the multitude of issues surrounding climate change in various regions around the world. She helps support communities and countries alike as they make the change to greener low carbon economies in an effort to combat many of the cross-cutting issues of climate change. This shift is having an impact on the labor market and is highlighting the importance of having strong public and private sector stakeholders to support sustainability projects, locally and globally.

In the March Collab, Ms. Soliman will help us examine a variety of questions surrounding sustainability in business schools including:

  • What shifts do we see in terms of needed skills in the current sustainability labor market?
  • How can business schools prepare their students to be effective leaders in the current sustainability sector?
  • What can business schools do to support the sustainability efforts of their local communities and countries?
  • How can business schools foster more effective public-private partnerships and leverage them to achieve their sustainability goals?

GBSN Members are Invited to February’s Cross-Border Collab: Developing Managers and Rebalancing Society

The February Collab will feature special guest Dr. Henry Mintzberg. Dr. Mintzberg is a Professor of Management Studies at McGill University and an accomplished writer, having authored 20 books and countless articles on management education and business strategy, including Managers not MBAs and Simply Managing. Recognized as a leader in challenging the status quo of business education, Dr. Mintzberg will join us to talk about about rebalancing society, understanding organizations, and what both mean for developing managers.

In the session we will discuss several points Dr. Mintzberg makes in his book, Managers not MBS’s around the belief that “conventional MBA classrooms overemphasize the science of management while ignoring its art and denigrating its craft”. We will also explore the dynamic solutions Dr. Mintzberg proposes in his book Rebalancing Society. Faced with the challenges of political polarization, human exploitation, and climate change, business schools are perfectly positioned to help support the growth and development of a rebalanced society. We will discuss how we can “engage in social movements and social initiatives that challenge destructive practices and replace them with constructive ones.”

Dr. Mintzberg will join us as we re-examine the role of business schools in developing managers and helping to rebalance society. We will consider questions like:

  • What can business school do to reemphasize a more engaging style of management?
  • What unique role can business schools play in the rebalancing of society?
  • How can GBSN Members leverage the GBSN Network to develop more engaging managers  and challenge societal imbalance?

Institutions & Entrepreneurship 2023 Conference

Call for papers for the 3rd Institutions & Entrepreneurship Conference and PhD Workshop   June 8-10, 2023, Montreal, Quebec, Canada

The Desautels Faculty of Management of McGill University and the Johnson Graduate School of Management of  Cornell University are pleased to announce the upcoming conference on Institutions and Entrepreneurship, to  be held in Montreal, June 8 to 10, 2023.

Similar to the successful Institutions and Entrepreneurship Conferences of 2007 and 2008, the 2023 conference  will bring together scholars who take an institutional approach to the study of entrepreneurship and  entrepreneurial processes, broadly defined.

Institutions – the regulative, normative, and cognitive pillars of society – serve as both constraints and enablers  of entrepreneurial action. Institutions are tied to time and place, and while relatively stable are subject to change,  sometimes gradually and sometimes more abruptly. Entrepreneurship, or the construction of new organizations,  organizational forms, and markets both affects and is affected by institutions. We are interested in papers that  speak to this relationship: How do institutions affect entrepreneurship, and how does entrepreneurship affect  institutions? Our preference is for empirical papers.

Examples include but are not limited to:

  • How do changes in regulatory, normative, or cognitive institutions create opportunities for  entrepreneurship?
  • In what ways can social movements be generative of entrepreneurship? Do social movement actors  engage in entrepreneurship to further their cause?
  • How do entrepreneurs build institutional structures, such as regulatory and quasi-regulatory regimes,  that promote new organizations and markets?
  • How do entrepreneurs draw on institutional logics to legitimate novel organizational forms? What  entrepreneurial opportunities exist in spheres characterized by conflicting logics?
  • How do entrepreneurs deploy cultural elements in their activities? Can symbolic and ceremonial action  further their interests?

We are open to both qualitative and quantitative research designs and to a wide variety of contexts, including:  □ Institutions and entrepreneurship in emerging markets.

  • Institutions and entrepreneurship in the informal economy.
  • Entrepreneurship amongst social groups that are institutionally marginalized.  â–Ą Institutions and entrepreneurship in times of economic and social disruption (political or economic  crises, mass immigration, war, famine, natural disasters, etc.).

Conference Details

The conference will be held from Thursday, June 8 to Saturday, June 10, 2023 at the Desautels Faculty of Management,  McGill University, Montreal, Canada.
