Haas School of Business’ Kristi Raube Takes on Liberia!

Kristi Raube, the executive director of the Institute for Business & Social Impact, director of both the Graduate Program in Health Management and the International Business Development Program at Berkeley Haas, has been a longtime GBSN member and supporter. Raube recently announced that after 18 years of dedicating her career to academia, she will be leaving UC Berkeley to embark on a new adventure.

Raube and her husband will be moving to Africa, where she has accepted the position of Peace Corps Country Director for the Republic of Liberia. She actually began her career as a Peace Corps volunteer in Togo and Zaire, which is now the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In 1999, the Haas School of Business recruited Raube to revive its Graduate Program In Health Management. In her 15 years at Haas, Raube has been a key architect of programs that combine the study of business with the broader goals of healthcare access, poverty reduction, and social justice. In addition, Raube also executed consulting and research projects in over 60 countries across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. She has been the director of the International Business Development Program at Haas since 2010.

Raube has dedicated her career to teaching and researching health and poverty issues. She is now returning full circle with her new position in Liberia.

The Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley has been a GBSN member since 2007. Over the years, Kristi has been involved in numerous GBSN activities and programs. I highlight a few below.

She was involved in the Karachi Education Initiative, where GBSN worked to help develop the new Karachi School for Business and Leadership in Karachi, Pakistan. GBSN established an International Advisory Board, in which Kristi served, developed a strategic plan, initiated a search for the dean, and outlined the faculty recruitment plan to actively guide the development of the school.

GBSN organized and facilitated a faculty development workshop for Universiti Tun Abdul Razak in Kuala Lumpur. Representatives from a number of GBSN member schools, including Raube, participated in the workshop and presented their approaches to experiential learning through activities such as student consulting projects and discussed with Uni Razak faculty and leadership the pros and cons of the different approaches in order to identify the most appropriate one for the institution. Following the workshop, Raube organized a team of UC Berkeley MBA students, through the Berkeley-_Haas International Business Development program, to work with Universiti Tun Abdul Razak faculty, students and administration to further design and develop a pilot program for testing with Universiti Tun Abdul Razak students in 2013. Under mentorship of Kristi, the four-member student team spent approximately 1000 hours on the project.

Photos of Kristi’s participation in GBSN programs and events (2007 – 2017).

In 2011, GBSN worked with Johnson & Johnson to set up a framework for the development of case studies to be used in health management training programs. These case studies were to be based on health organizations in Africa or other parts of the developing world in order to introduce contextually relevant issues to Johnson & Johnson programs such as the Management Development Institute.

In addition to developing the framework for case writing activities, GBSN teamed up with the Anderson School of Business at UCLA to develop the first set of case studies for the MDI program. These case studies were based on organizations in Ghana and South Africa and were written in a way so as to be useful in the MDI program as well as relevant to a broader audience of business school faculty engaged in health management training. Once the cases were drafted, along with the teaching note that will guide other faculty on using the case in class, they were reviewed by prestigious faculty from the network. These case reviewers included Kristi Raube, Haas School of Business (UC Berkeley), professors from Fuqua School of Business (Duke), and IESE Business School.

Raube has also served on the GBSN Academic Advisory Board for years. The board is comprised of GBSN member school representatives who review all institutional applications to the network, looking for business schools that demonstrate excellence, innovation, internationalization and a willingness to engage in GBSN’s mission and activities.

On a personal note, Kristi was also very instrumental to continuing my education. Watching me grow from an intern to full-time staff at GBSN and being the academic that she is, Kristi was supportive of my going back to school to pursue my masters degree at Georgetown University, where I am currently enrolled. Alongside my boss Page, she advocated for me through a recommendation letter, in which I will always appreciate! She also spent time with my family in the Philippines when GBSN had its 2015 Annual Conference at the Asian Institute of Management. I feel particularly close to this GBSN member, to say the least.

The Haas in the World blog, run by Haas MBA students, recently sat down and interviewed Kristi to get a better sense of how she feels about this once in a lifetime opportunity, as well as what she is leaving behind at UC Berkeley and Berkeley-Haas. Click here to read more.

Kristi Raube has been such an instrumental figure and engaged GBSN member over the years. We will miss her terribly! Thank you for your longtime service and impact in the world of academia, Kristi. Good luck on you’re new adventure!
