Hasan Ali is an Assistant General Counsel at Microsoft where he leads Strategic Projects & Cloud Initiatives for Corporate Legal Affairs.  His team focuses on keeping the company ahead of emerging legal, regulatory, and public policy challenges, particularly as they relate to expanding cloud services in critical industries.  Prior to this role, Hasan oversaw Microsoft’s global law enforcement & national security policy and strategy across all Microsoft services and programs. This included legal frameworks for government access to digital evidence, as well as government access implications for datacenter & infrastructure expansion, product development, and commercial/sales workstreams. 

Before joining Microsoft, Hasan served as Senior Counsel to then-Chairman/Ranking Member Patrick Leahy on the Senate Judiciary Committee.  In that role, he provided policy and strategic guidance on surveillance, digital privacy, cybercrime, and national security matters.  Prior to the Senate, Hasan worked in private practice with WilmerHale in Washington, D.C.  Following law school, he served as Chairman’s Fellow on the Senate Judiciary Committee, and then clerked for Judge Beryl A. Howell in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.  He received a BA from the University of Chicago and a JD from Boston University School of Law.
