Tech4Democracy Venture Day Delhi

Woxsen University is pleased to announce that it will be the Indian Support Partner at the upcoming Tech4Democracy Venture Day Delhi 2023, organised by IE University, and ORF. The event will take place on March 2nd, 2023, in New Delhi, India, and will bring together entrepreneurs, investors, policy makers, and academics to discuss the intersection of technology and democracy and its impact on the future.

“We are delighted to be a support partner at the Tech4Democracy Venture Day Delhi 2023”, said Dr. Raul V. Rodriguez, Vice President, Woxsen University. “Our focus on entrepreneurship and innovation aligns perfectly with the goals of the event, and we believe that our participation will also be a relevant factor for the event.”

The Initiative

Tech4Democracy consists of two interdependent and mutually reinforcing pillars:

A Global Entrepreneurship Challenge to identify entrepreneurs developing innovative digital technologies that contribute to the advancement of democracy around the globe. The Challenge is composed of five Venture Day competitions in five continents: Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, North America, and South America. Entrepreneurs will be evaluated based on their contribution to democratic values, technological innovation, viability/scalability and interest for potential investors, and the experience, knowledge, skills, and diversity of their teams.
A long-term line of applied research that will map the state of the art of the field of democracy-affirming technologies and guide policymakers, industry leaders, investors and entrepreneurs who wish to advance technological progress in a manner that promotes freedom, equality, solidarity and inclusion.

Areas of Innovation

We seek startups/scaleups that develop usable democracy-affirming technologies such as the following:

Data for Policymaking

Technologies that allow for better data collection, processing, and visualization, in order to inform policy-making and decision-making processes in a way that is respectful of privacy and individual rights.

Responsible AI and Machine Learning

Automated decision-making systems that provide equal opportunity, do not discriminate, and are fair, explainable, auditable, ethical, and accurate.

Tools to Fight Disinformation

Technologies that support fact-checking efforts, identify bot activity or work on social data to promote accurate information on key matters, including electoral processes.

Digital Identity and Trust

Transparency technologies and identity recognition or protection technologies that ensure inclusive access to digital public services and protection of sensible data.

Transparent and Inclusive Government Data

Technologies that promote accountability and inclusive services and foster economic growth through the provision of data, services, and resources that startups, scaleups, and SMEs can leverage to generate business.

Woxsen University & Rhodes Business School in association with GRLI will be organising the “GRLI Courageous Conversation”, a platform to discussed the “untouchable” topics concerning the Global South.

For decades, the various challenges emcompasing schools and varsities at different points of the planet have set a paradigm shift.

Universities in developed countries face a variety of challenges, including maintaining their competitiveness in a globalized economy, adapting to rapidly changing technology, and addressing the rising cost of higher education. These challenges often involve finding new sources of funding and implementing innovative teaching methods to meet the diverse needs of students.

Additionally, developed countries universities also face the challenge of ensuring that their graduates are prepared for the workforce and can compete in a global marketplace.

In contrast, universities in developing countries often face different and more pressing challenges, such as inadequate funding, a lack of trained faculty, and poor infrastructure. These universities may also struggle to attract and retain students, as many lack the resources and opportunities available at universities in developed countries. To address these challenges, universities in developing countries may focus on strengthening partnerships with other institutions, leveraging technology to improve access to education, and investing in faculty development programs. Additionally, they may also have to work with government to lobby for more funding, policy change and regulations that can help improve their situation.

Hence, a conversation around these matters may settle (or open) new arenas of exploration within the management and higher education segment holistically.

Spring Symposium: Reinventing Health, Hospitality, and Design

General Information

The Cornell University Institute for Healthy Futures will host innovative thought leaders in healthcare, health policy, hospitality, wellness, and architectural design. The symposium will open with a welcome reception on the evening of Thursday, May 11. Our full-day symposium will start on Friday, May 12, to explore how decision makers and designers can respond to changing needs in mental health, work life balance, wellness, safety by design, affordable senior living, and other related areas. Together industry experts, academic scholars, leaders, and students will explore current challenges and possible evidence-based solutions with an interdisciplinary perspective.

Following the symposium, the third day, Saturday, May 13, will feature a more intimate hands-on thought design workshop led by Troy Savage. Designers will join healthcare and assisted living leaders to collaborate in an interactive day of re-imagining the design of communities in response to changing needs.

Business Forward, the knowledge portal of The American University in Cairo School of Business, is hosting the fifth edition of its annual event! The event will also be live-streamed virtually.

The fifth edition of the anticipated Business Forward Annual Event takes stock of the past year’s economic performance and provides expert perspectives on the future outlook and suggested remedies through in depth analysis of local and global trends. It brings in academic, professional and industry perspectives on current economic challenges manifested in a weakening local currency, rising inflation and foreign debt, and a shrinking private sector.

The end goal of the event would be a white paper that provides actionable suggestions for policymakers and other stakeholders to address the current complex economic challenges; an exercise that will reflect on the discussions of the event and will be led by the AUC School of Business Department of Economics, which celebrates its 75th anniversary on the day of the event.

Business School Educators’ Technical Workshop on Forced Labor in Fishing

Background

The University of Geneva (UNIGE) School for Economics and Management (GSEM) is hosting a technical workshop for business school educators to develop a standard teaching tool on forced labour in fishing. This activity is organized with the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Global Business School Network (GBSN). It is the first concrete output of the newly signed Memorandum of Understanding between ILO-GBSN

GSEM, designed to further integrate labour rights and human rights in business education.

The activity draws on the expertise of all three partners and notably:

– The technical expertise of ILO on the fisheries sector, fundamental principles and rights at work including forced labour.

– The participation of several business school lecturers coming from the GBSN for Business and Human Rights impact community.

– The experience of the Geneva Centre for Business and Human Rights, hosted by GSEM, in developing standard case studies and pedagogic material on pressing business and human rights issues.

Why focus on forced labor in fishing?

The activity is organized with support from the 8.7 Accelerator Lab, an initiative of the ILO designed to accelerate progress in the fight against forced labour and child labour, key elements of the United Nations SDG Target 8.7.

Forced labour and child labour are two of the five ILO Fundamental principles and rights at work and the 187 ILO member states are bound to respect, promote and realize these principles and rights, whether they have ratified the related conventions or not. However, despite the centrality of fundamental rights, recent estimates on forced labour and child labour illustrate that we are not making the needed progress to achieve our global targets as per the 2030 Agenda: the elimination of child labour by 2025 and the elimination of forced labour by 2030.

With regards to forced labour, the latest estimates published by the ILO in September 2022 suggest that there are currently 27.6 million workers currently entrapped in forced labour situations, a rise of 2.7 million since 2016. Forced labour in fishing has been singled out as a persistent and underestimated problem.

Concomitantly, it appears that the fishing industry, including the working and living conditions of fishers, is rarely used in business school education as a topic to be discussed in the classroom. This is surprising considering the economic size of the fishing industry and how important fish and fish-based products are globally. According to the FAO 2022 edition of the State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture, an estimated 600 million people rely on the fisheries and aquaculture sector for their livelihoods.

AUC School of Business will be hosting for the first time the 32nd CEMS Annual Events and 2022 Graduation Ceremony at the Pyramids of Giza. CEMS is the global alliance of leading business schools, multinational companies and NGOs that together offer the CEMS Master in International Management.

Attended both physically and virtually by over 7,000 members of the CEMS community, the event represents an exceptional opportunity to bring together the entire community for discussions, decision-making, networking, and the graduation of CEMS MIM students.
